Sr Hornets Championship Bound

Oh what a night. In fact, you could say oh what a week. The Sr High Hackett Hornet boys’ team is proving that even the underdog will have his day. The boys have fought their way through adversity and season setbacks to get to where they are today. And where they are today is sitting in the final round of the 2A-4 Sr District Championship.

On Tuesday, February 12, the Hornets took to the court to challenge the JC Westside Rebels. The Rebels were seeded at #5 while Hackett rooted down at #4. After skillfully dominating Westside, the Hornets earned a final score of 60-37.

Moving on to their second round of the tournament, Hackett was slated to face the #1 seeded Lavaca Golden Arrows in last night’s semi-finals. With the odds stacked against them, many assumed this would be a blowout with the Hornets walking away empty handed. But as they have proven all season long to their naysayers and competitors, you should never judge a book by its cover.

With a halftime score of 15-12 Arrows, fans knew that this was not going to be an ordinary game. For the second half of the match, Hackett was done playing cat and mouse basketball. The Hornets swarmed the Arrows like a crowd swarms a store on Black Friday. Holding Lavaca to only two points, Hackett was able to slap on 26 more points before ending the game with a blowout final score of 38-17 Hornets.

In a case of pure irony, Hackett will compete against Mountainburg for tonight’s Championship game. Mountainburg was the team that tied with Hackett in conference play with both squads having a 7-5 record. The Dragons got the #3 seed while the Hornets took #4. Hackett is now ready to go big or go home as they prepare for play at 7:30 pm tonight February 15 in Danville.
