Playoff Bound and Down: Mansfield Round 1

By Megan Hecox

The Mansfield Tigers have officially ended their PLAYOFF drought. The Tigers are 7-3 overall this season and finished 4-3 in conference play. They picked up the 3rd seed in conference and will be playing their first PLAYOFF game in 7 years. And like the Wizard of Oz says. There’s no place like Home. There’s no place like home. That’s right. The Tigers will be hosting the Melbourne Bearkatz, who also scored the 3rd seed in their division, at their very own Tiger Stadium.

Mansfield Coach Craig Bentley said “Our goal from day one was to make it into the playoffs this season. Not only did we succeed in making the Playoffs, but we also get to play on our home field. We’re SUPER proud of our guys but now is not the time for reflection. We will treat this week like any other week. Melbourne is a good team and very similar to ourselves. It will be a great game and a great Playoff atmosphere.”

If you are thinking of a blowout from either team, think again. The Tigers and Bearkatz are almost dead even if you look at the stats. Melbourne has finished their season 6-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play which is toe to toe with the Tigers. Mansfield has scored a total of 285 points so far this season while Melbourne has scored 260 points. The Tigers have held opponents to 181 total points while the Bearkatz have held their opponents to 170 points. If (When) Mansfield wins this first round, they will go on to face either Osceola or Fouke, depending on the outcome of that game.

The Mansfield Tigers are headed to the PLAYOFFS for the first time since 2011 and for only the 8th time in school history. Their goal has been achieved and now they look to reach higher by moving deep into the PLAYOFFS and winning the Championship. It all starts this Friday night November 9th…..Mansfield vs Melbourne at Tiger Stadium at 7 pm…..see you there! Due to AAA rules, no school or local passes will be accepted.
