The Paris Lady Eagles took just 58 minutes to win the 3A West tournament semifinal over the third-seeded Charleston Lady Tigers. Paris will now advance to the final of the district tournament to play the Hackett Lady Hornets Thursday night at 6 p.m. in Hackett.
Charleston will host the Waldron Lady Bulldogs at Tiger Center at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the consolation game for the third seed going into next week’s state tournament.
The teams that have punched their tickets to the state tournament are Hackett, Paris, Charleston, and Waldron. Thursday’s games will determine the final seeding that each team will carry from the conference into the state tournament.
Paris coach Jordan Devine was pleased with the effort and focus the team had in Wednesday’s semifinal match. Paris looked like a team that is poised to make a post-season run. Coach Devine said immediately after the match with Charleston, “I was really proud of them. I thought we looked good. I thought a lot of people stepped up and played really well. In the second set, we had way too many errors. We have to clean that up. But, we’re all excited. Our goal for tonight was to keep our focus on tonight (semifinal against Charleston). It’s not about Thursday, its about tonight. We had to take care of business tonight. Everybody around the state knows that; you got to take care of business today.”
To illustrate Coach Devine’s point of being ready to take care of business today, in the world of post-season play, every match has the potential to be your last. Last year’s 3A state champion and this year’s state tournament host, Little Rock Episcopal, was eliminated on Tuesday in their district tournament by Ashdown. So now, no one in the state tournament will face the prospect of playing the defending state champion on their home floor next week. But for now, it is simply one game at a time, and for both Hackett and Paris, Thursday night’s game will be a game for the top seed from the 3A West going into the state tournament. The loser will go to state as a number two seed.
