On Monday May 8, 2017, the Mansfield Chess Team ended their 2016-2017 school year with a little hometown competition in the second annual end of the year tournament. At the end of each year the team competes in a five game tournament against one another to see who will reign as junior high and senior high champion of the year. Winner gets bragging rights until the next tournament; they get their name on the school plague, and receive a new weighted tournament chess set with a carrying case. Runner-up receives a new tournament chess set.
Our undefeated Junior High champion is ninth grader Jet Scoma. Jet won the tournament last year as an eighth grader as well.  Runner-up is eighth grader Ethan Streets with four wins and one loss. Other competing chess team members were Lillian Buccella, Kaitlin Peterson, Katelyn Salmeron, Peyton Martin, Trista Delp, AJ Vilavong, Kimber Campbell, and Renden Emery.
Eleventh grader Vance Vannaraj, (not pictured) is our undefeated champion of the Senior High division. This is Vance’s first year to win the tournament. Last year’s champion was Michael Hall. Our Runner-up with three wins and two losses is Jessica George. Other competing chess team members were Rance Mickle, Michael Hall, Devon Pyles, Dillon Hines, and Dylan Perez.
Congratulations to our 2016-2017 Mansfield End of the Year Tournament Champions!
