It was a victorious night for the Mansfield Lady Tigers. After sitting 0-9 in conference play, the Lady Tigers scored a well desearved 42-38 win over the Waldron Lady Bulldogs. For the boys’ team, the Tigers pushed as hard as they could but ended up barring a loss of 69-48 against the Waldron Bulldogs.
With the (1-9) Lady Tigers bringing home their first conference win of the season, they couldn’t be more ecstatic. The Lady Bulldogs held the lead the entire first half of the game then tying 28-28 at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Tigers knew this game was theirs for the taking. When others would have given up, the Lady Tigers buckled down to seal the deal. Securing the leash on the Lady Bulldogs, Rylea Weaver sank 4 out of 4 free throws in the last 30 seconds of the game, bringing in 11 points for her team. Makayla Strutton led the Lady Tigers in 12 points while Mikayla Harrison scored 10. Adding a combined 11 points to the scoreboard were Amber Elmore, Brooke Wright, and Macy Davis. The Lady Tigers also walked away with 27 rebounds.
The (1-9) Tigers have made great improvements since the beginning of the season with their defensive intensity. Unfortunately, last night the Bulldogs were always one step ahead of them in their offensive game. Coach Keith Dake says of his Tigers, “Over the past month, we have been forcing close to 13 steals per game. If we could find a way to turn those turnovers into points on a consistent basis and be more efficient on the offensive end then we would be tough to beat, so long as we could shake our own turnover issues.” Codi Chick led his team with 11 points while Ethan Stovall brought in 10. Layton Howard, Jaicy Griffin, and Brock Curry each made 6 points for the Tigers and JoJo Bailey, Tyler Holmes, and Jackson Andrews combined for 9 points.
The Mansfield Tigers will stay home and face Elkins on Thursday, January 24 with Jr High starting at 4 pm.
