With two conference games left the Lavaca Golden Arrows and Lavaca Lady Arrows are both sitting atop of the conference standings. The Lady Arrows are currently in second place one game behind Danville but they will host the Lady Little Johns to close out the regular season on Tuesday February 5th in what could amount to a winner take all match up. But first the Lady Arrows will need to muster up a big win in a rematch at Hector tomorrow night. In the first meeting the Lady Arrows had three players hit double digit scoring and soundly beat the Lady Wildcats 58-30.
The Lady Arrows are coming off an overtime win against JC Westside 44-38. The Lady Rebs are quick and were able to keep things close all night. Westside was able to frustrate the Lady Arrows holding them to a low scoring game. In the 5th quarter, Lavaca was finally able to pull away and get the win. This was a moment of growth for Lavaca as they proved to themselves that they had what it takes to “gut out a close one”. Coach Wyles explained his pride in the teams growth, “I was really proud of the girls for finding a way to win on a night where we were struggling to score. Westside came in with a good game plan and they executed it well. Early in the season we lost a couple games like that in overtime. It’s good to see that we’ve learned from some of those early season losses, and are finding a way to win the close games when it matters most.” Skylar Hyatt led the team with a double double. She had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sierra Lamb added another 12 points. They will need to keep playing with this type of grit as they make their final run for a championship.
The Golden Arrow boys team are also in line to bring home a Conference title. They are currently undefeated in conference and two games ahead of Danville with two games left. One win and the Conference title belongs in Lavaca! The Arrows are also ranked third in class and should make a good run for a State title. They just keep doing what they do. They can secure the 2A4 Conference title Tomorrow night at Hector and claim the number one seed in the District tournament. The last time Hector and Lavaca tipped off was January 8th in a game that Lavaca won 72-37. In that game Jayger Wagner and Andrew Wright both hit five 3’s to lead the team in points.
Tuesday night the Arrows played a rematch game against a scrappy Westside Rebel’s team. The Rebel’s move the ball well and shoot lights out from outside. The Arrows scored below their average but were in control the entire game. They ended this game with a 50-34 win. The Arrows had three players in double digits. Jordan Fenner led the team with 21 points, Matt Melton added another 14 points, and Cayden Hearn rounded it out at 10. The Arrows defense was stellar. The Rebel’s average 46 point per game but the Arrows held them to only 34 points. Coach Reed was happy with the way the Arrows played saying, “I thought we played with more intensity tonight than we have been, I was pleased with everyone’s effort. We didn’t shoot great from perimeter but that didn’t weaken our confidence.”
One this is for sure and certain, the final few games of the regular season will be exciting. There is lot riding on the outcomes and you wont want to miss it!
