In a unanimous vote by the board of directors, Wally Gattis was named as the next Mayor of the City of Barling. Gattis had been serving as Vice-Mayor for the city until the passing of long-time Mayor Jerry Barling. By statute, the council was required to make an appointment to fill that vacancy during the meeting on Tuesday evening, October 23.
“I’ve lived in the city for 54 years,” Gattis stated. ” As long as we work as a team, we will win and I’ll do my best.”
Gattis was sworn in immediately and will serve out the remaining term of former Mayor Jerry Barling, which goes through December 31, 2018.
